Australian Group Races are the highest class of thoroughbred race in Australian racing. The most recognised group races in Australia are the Melbourne Cup, Caulfield Cup, Golden slipper and WS Cox Plate, which are all Group 1 races.

Group races total over 540+ races each year which works out around 2-3% of total races held each season in Australia.

Group races are divided into 4 categories;
Group 1 - at least $250,000 prizemoney - 60+ races per season
Group 2 - at least $125,000 prizemoney - 80+ races per season
Group 3 - at least $75,000 prizemoney - 110+ races per season
Listed - at least $50,000 prizemoney - 280+ races per season

The Australian horse racing season runs from August to July each year and we have listed all the Group 1 and Group 2 races on the racing calendar.

The AJC Metropolitan is a Group One Australian Thoroughbred horse race held under open handicap conditions, for horses aged three years old and upwards, over a distance of 2,400 metres. It is one of the main races in the Sydney Spring Carnival held in early October at Randwick Racecourse, along with the Epsom Handicap over 1,600 metres. Also held on the same day is Group 1 Flight Stakes, Spring Champion Stakes, the Group 2 The Shorts, Roman Consul Stakes and the Group 3 Craven Plate.

The Metropolitan is a 2400m event and is the the premier staying event of the Sydney spring racing carnival and is held under much the same conditions as the Gr1 Caulfield Cup in Melbourne later in the spring.
